Police Officer Narrowly Escapes High-Speed Crash During Traffic Stop

In a heart-stopping incident on Monday, a police officer conducting a routine traffic stop miraculously escaped injury when a speeding car careened across a highway at 120 mph. Dashcam footage released by Fairfax County Police captured the intense moments as a black BMW, driven by a 17-year-old, narrowly missed the officer who had stepped out of his patrol car to pull over another vehicle.

The black BMW skidded across a median on the Fairfax County Parkway near Braddock Road, colliding with the pulled-over car and then ricocheting into the patrol car. Despite the severity of the crash, all occupants of the black BMW, including the driver and two teenage passengers, escaped major injuries thanks to seatbelt usage.

The 17-year-old driver of the black BMW now faces charges of reckless driving, a misdemeanor that carries potential jail time in Virginia. Interestingly, state law restrictions prevent authorities from releasing details about the driver or the crash that could lead to identification.

Traffic safety concerns among teen drivers are highlighted by Deputy Police Chief Bob Blakley, citing a 62 percent increase in teen speeding citations and a 98 percent increase in tickets for failure to follow signs or signals in Fairfax County this year. Reconstruction experts determined that the black BMW was traveling at an alarming 120 mph in a 50 mph zone before losing control.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis emphasized the importance of recognizing the dangers officers face while enforcing traffic laws. The officer involved, a 13-year veteran, demonstrated remarkable composure during the incident, utilizing a safety tactic by approaching the driver on the passenger side.
