A British man found guilty of having sex with chickens while his wife filmed him will get to keep his birds due to a legal loophole.
Rehan Baig, 37, was sentenced to three years in prison for his repulsive actions, which also included possession of child sex abuse material discovered on his computer by police in July last year. According to the BBC, a judge at Bradford Crown Court remarked that Baig’s actions would make a right-thinking person “sick to their stomach.”
Baig’s wife, Haleema Baig, received a six-month suspended sentence for her involvement in the crime, which reportedly led to the death of several brown and white chickens.
In sentencing the couple, Judge Richard Mansell QC described Baig’s behavior as “depraved, perverted, and despicable,” as reported by the BBC. Authorities also found footage of Baig sexually abusing a dog.
Despite these findings, the judge was unable to impose a ban on Baig owning livestock. After initially attempting to enforce a lifetime ban on animal ownership, the judge realized it was not legally feasible. “There was no animal cruelty charge on the indictment. I have no power therefore to prohibit him from owning animals,” he explained.
The judge suggested that the prosecution consult with the RSPCA and bring the matter before the city’s magistrates to determine if an order could be enforced.
