Bodycam footage released by New York Attorney General Letitia James reveals the moment a 21-year-old man, reportedly off his medication and under the influence of marijuana, was fatally shot by police in Roosevelt Island. The incident occurred around 11:30 PM on August 4, after a family member reported a disturbance at 540 Main Street.
Officers Virealla-Abreu, Birch, Mehr, and Mazza were on the scene. As some officers headed towards the apartment, the suspect unexpectedly exited an elevator and charged at an officer with a kitchen knife. In response, Officer Abreu attempted to use a taser, but when that failed, officers Mehr and Mazza fired their weapons.
The man, dressed in a white OVO logo t-shirt, black sweatpants, and green-laced Nike Jordan sneakers, was hit multiple times and collapsed. Despite initial first aid by officers, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 12:28 AM on August 5.
The NYPD released a statement and footage as part of an investigation by the Office of Special Investigation, mandated under New York State law to review incidents where a suspect dies by police action. The release of the footage aims to enhance transparency and public trust in police conduct.
