On the evening of July 4th, at approximately 5:40 PM, the tranquility of the Candido Guadalupe Terrace housing community in St. Croix was shattered by the sound of gunfire. The 911 Emergency Call Centre was alerted to a distressing situation involving two victims of a shooting. Responding swiftly, police officers arrived at the scene to find a woman and her 15-year-old daughter wounded.
The unfolding investigation painted a grim picture of the events. It was determined that the altercation began with a physical dispute between the 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, the son of 52-year-old Miguel A. Marrero. Marrero was present at the scene, reportedly encouraging his son during the fight.
The situation escalated when the mother of the 15-year-old intervened, confronting Marrero about the brawl involving their children. In a shocking turn of events, Marrero allegedly drew a firearm. Without hesitation, he fired multiple shots. The first bullet struck the mother in the back, followed by two shots that hit her daughter.
Emergency services were immediately called to the scene. Both victims were rushed to Juan F. Luis Hospital. The mother, suffering from severe injuries, was taken into emergency surgery and remains in critical condition. Her daughter, though also wounded, received treatment and was fortunately discharged after medical attention.
Following the incident, Miguel A. Marrero was apprehended by the police and is currently in custody. The community and authorities alike are left grappling with the repercussions of this violent act, as investigations continue to uncover the full scope of the incident.
