Electric bicycle’s battery explosion

On October 8, 2021, a tragic incident in Haizhu District was confirmed by the “Zhuhai Special Zone Daily,” where a man named Chen experienced a fatal accident involving his electric bicycle’s battery. Chen, noticing the battery was overheating, decided to take it outside to cool off, but disaster struck the moment he stepped into the elevator. The aftermath left him with extensive burns, severe inhalation injuries, damage to his left eye, and acute kidney issues, ultimately leading to his death from an acute myocardial infarction at home on November 3.

The incident was officially attributed to a thermal runaway event in the lithium battery, as per the local fire department’s investigation. This has sparked warnings from experts against the unauthorized removal of batteries from electric vehicles. Furthermore, the public has been cautioned against bringing electric vehicles or their batteries into elevators or charging them indoors, highlighting the risks associated with lithium battery handling and storage.
