In a disturbing incident at Barcelona’s Camp de l’Arpa metro station, a man allegedly assaulted several women, prompting an investigation into whether the attacks were motivated by gender-based hate. The suspect, identified as a man of North African origin with a criminal history, was apprehended following the Friday morning assault.
The attacker was observed moving along the platform, violently striking out at women, with one particularly brutal attack where he punched a young woman, causing her to fall and him to lose balance. This assault reportedly resulted in the woman suffering a perforated eardrum.
Police are exploring multiple angles, including if the assailant was under the influence of substances, and whether he committed similar attacks on a train prior to the platform incidents. Witnesses report the man verbally abused those who confronted his actions, and at least two individuals were assaulted while attempting to intervene.
This incident adds to a growing concern over gender-based violence in Catalonia, where statistics show a significant increase in such crimes. Last year alone, there was a notable rise in reported cases of gender-based domestic violence, highlighting a regional crisis.
The Barcelona metro attack has reignited public outcry, with thousands previously protesting against gender violence across Catalonian cities, reflecting a broader societal demand for change and justice in the face of escalating violence against women.
