On February 4, 2021, a routine traffic stop on Interstate 10 near Deming, New Mexico, turned fatal in a tragic incident that shook the law enforcement community. New Mexico State Police Officer Darian Jarrott, a 28-year-old officer and father of three, was conducting the stop on a white Chevrolet pickup driven by Omar Felix Cueva. Unbeknownst to Officer Jarrott, Cueva had a violent criminal history, including convictions for drug trafficking and other offenses. Officer Jarrott’s body camera footage captured the initial exchange as he approached the vehicle and engaged Cueva in a polite conversation, asking him to step out of the truck.
